Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been detained by Israeli authorities since December 27, 2024. His lawyer, Ghaid Ghanem Qasem, reported that Dr. Abu Safiya's health has severely deteriorated after more than 190 days in custody. He has lost over 40 kilograms, dropping from 100 kg to around 60 kg, which amounts to more than one-third of his body weight. The lawyer also stated that Dr. Abu Safiya was subjected to severe beatings in the chest, face, head, and neck areas, with the assault lasting approximately 30 minutes. Additionally, he is reportedly being denied medical care and held in solitary confinement. Dr. Abu Safiya is suffering from heart conditions and medical negligence while in detention. Amnesty International’s Agnes Callamard has highlighted the dire conditions of his imprisonment and has called on countries to exert influence on Israel to secure his release. This case comes amid reports that Israel has killed over 1,500 medical personnel and taken hundreds more hostage.
