The family of Israeli soldier Nimrod Cohen on 25 August released video and photographs showing his abduction by Hamas fighters during the 7 October 2023 attacks. The images, recovered by Israel Defense Forces troops in Gaza, depict the 19-year-old being pulled from his tank and dragged, wounded, across the border. Cohen is the only survivor from his four-man crew and has been held in the Gaza Strip for almost two years. Cohen’s mother, Vicki, said the publication is intended to intensify public pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to conclude a cease-fire and prisoner-exchange agreement. Families of other captives, including relatives of Itay Chen and U.S. citizen Omer Neutra, accuse the government of prioritising political considerations over the release of roughly 50 remaining hostages. The release of the footage follows mounting international appeals. Former hostage Ilana Gritzewsky told the UN Security Council this week that abuses endured in captivity continue to haunt freed detainees, while U.S. and Israeli officials have warned that negotiations are at risk of stalling. Hostage advocates say time is running out, noting that the captives have now been held for nearly 700 days.
Notice how releasing the hostages and Hamas surrendering are the last on his list? There should have only ever been one global demand from day one: Hamas must surrender and release the hostages. https://t.co/a0wq2t7Lyr
Jarring testimony from former hostage Ilana Gritzewsky, speaking at UNSC, recounting the sexual assault, torture and starvation she experienced in Gaza … including her time being held captive at Nasser Hospital (which has been under intense attention these days). https://t.co/Fj1Txk7oIg
This is the home of one of the hostages who was taken to Gaza on October 7. Recorded a few days after his kidnapping, the room was filled with his blood. They shot him, dragged his injured body to Gaza, let him die there, and used his body for bargaining. https://t.co/k2roAjOXOL
