The #BlueJays' Trade Deadline is all about Shane Bieber. If he starts and wins you a playoff game, it's one of the better deals this front office has made. If he somehow sticks around beyond 2025, jackpot.
The Toronto Blue Jays made their biggest move of the trade deadline by acquiring 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for right-hander Khal Stephen, the club’s No. 5 prospect. Bieber, 30, is rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and has logged four minor-league outings, most recently a four-inning appearance at Double-A. General manager Ross Atkins said the right-hander’s track record of performing "on really big stages" fit the club’s goal of raising its postseason ceiling. Bieber carries a $16 million player option for 2026, giving Toronto a potential path to keep him beyond this season. Toronto supplemented the headline deal with a series of smaller moves, adding catching prospect Brandon Valenzuela from the San Diego Padres for infielder Will Wagner, and securing reliever Louis Varland and first baseman Ty France from the Minnesota Twins just before the 6 p.m. Eastern deadline. Varland, 27, has posted a 2.02 ERA over 49 relief innings this year and remains under team control through 2029, while France, 31, is expected to see significant time against left-handed pitching after batting .251 with six home runs in 101 games. Minnesota received outfielder Alan Roden and left-hander Kendrys Rojas in the trade. The flurry leaves the Blue Jays with four new additions as they push for an American League playoff berth.
