Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts homered in consecutive games at Dodger Stadium, pushing his season total to 11 and giving his club early cushions in match-ups against the Chicago White Sox and the Houston Astros. On 4 July, Betts belted his 10th homer of the year, a solo shot to left-center in the seventh inning that widened the Dodgers’ advantage over the White Sox to 6–0. Earlier in the game he scored the opener on a Freddie Freeman run-scoring single. Betts followed up on 5 July by turning on a curveball from Astros left-hander Framber Valdez in the first inning, depositing it into the left-field pavilion to hand Los Angeles a 1–0 edge. Miguel Rojas later drove in Andy Pages as the Dodgers added to their lead.
