New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso became the club’s all-time home-run leader on Tuesday night, belting his 253rd career homer during the third inning against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. The two-run shot, driven off a 95-mph fastball from Atlanta ace Spencer Strider, broke the 37-year franchise record of 252 held by Darryl Strawberry. Alonso, 30, eclipsed the mark in his 965th major-league game—144 fewer than Strawberry needed—and later added a solo blast in the sixth inning for No. 254, stretching an 11–5 Mets advantage. The former National League Rookie of the Year now has 28 homers on the season and 96 RBIs. A second-round draft pick in 2016, Alonso has reached at least 40 homers in three of his first six campaigns and signed a two-year, $54 million deal with New York in February that includes a 2026 player option. He joins Manny Machado and Mike Trout as the only active players who currently hold their respective clubs’ career home-run records.
