Major League Baseball and the Chicago White Sox have barred a 22-year-old spectator from all 30 ballparks after he taunted Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte about his late mother during a 24 June game at Guaranteed Rate Field. The incident occurred in the seventh inning of the Diamondbacks’ 4–1 victory, leaving Marte visibly distraught and in tears on the field. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo rushed from the dugout to console the two-time All-Star and confronted the heckler, who was immediately ejected. The White Sox displayed scoreboard messages of support—“Baseball is family” and “The White Sox community supports Ketel Marte”—before the following night’s game. On Wednesday the White Sox announced the spectator had been banned indefinitely from their stadium; MLB later extended the sanction league-wide. A source told ESPN the decision was reached jointly by the club and the commissioner’s office. Marte subsequently revealed in a Spanish-language interview that the fan shouted, “I sent your mom a text last night.” His mother, Elpidia Valdez, died in a 2017 car crash while Marte was playing in Chicago. The 30-year-old said comments about his mother “cross the line” and urged the league to strengthen measures against abusive fan behavior.
