The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Wilyer Abreu on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 18, after the 26-year-old strained his right calf during Sunday’s game against Miami. Abreu leads the club with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs in 108 games. To fill the vacancy, Boston selected 22-year-old outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple-A Worcester on Aug. 21. Ranked the organization’s No. 3 prospect and No. 77 in baseball by MLB.com, Garcia earned the promotion after batting .289 with 20 homers, 73 RBIs and an .875 OPS across Double-A and Triple-A, including a .303 average and 17 homers in 66 games for Worcester. He will wear No. 51. Garcia made his major-league debut Friday night against the New York Yankees in the Bronx, a game briefly halted when a squirrel ran onto the field. The roster move comes as Boston, losers of eight of their past 12, trails New York by two games for the American League’s top wild-card spot.
