Mattel on 16 July introduced a new “Wicked: For Good” collection, expanding its licensed line tied to Universal’s two-part film adaptation of the Broadway musical. The launch includes deluxe fashion dolls of Ariana Grande’s Glinda and Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba, each retailing for $39.99, as well as a $24.99 Dorothy Gale figure, small-scale character packs and an Emerald City playset priced at $39.99. The products are available at major retailers and through Mattel’s online store. The release is timed to build momentum for “Wicked: Part Two,” set to open in cinemas on 21 November. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the sequel continues the back-story of the witches of Oz that began in last year’s first installment. Mattel, which has been investing in entertainment-linked merchandise after the success of its “Barbie” movie tie-ins, is positioning the Wicked range to capture demand from both collectors and younger fans ahead of the holiday season.
