Universal Pictures’ “Jurassic World Rebirth” roared to a $318.3 million global debut, the strongest opening of 2025 and the biggest worldwide launch so far this year. The seventh installment in the dinosaur franchise pushed aside “A Minecraft Movie” to seize the top spot over the holiday frame. In North America, the film collected an estimated $91.5 million from Friday through Sunday and $147.3 million during the extended Independence Day stretch, according to Comscore. Although those figures trail the $208 million domestic bow of 2015’s “Jurassic World” and the $148 million start of 2018’s “Fallen Kingdom,” they set a new benchmark for the July 4 weekend and underscore the series’ enduring drawing power. Overseas audiences contributed about $171 million across 82 markets, led by China with $41.5 million, the U.K., Mexico, Germany and South Korea. The performance brings cumulative ticket sales for the franchise to more than $7 billion and reinforces the appetite for tent-pole spectacles as cinemas regain ground lost to streaming during the pandemic. Budgeted at roughly $180 million—well below the $250 million cost of earlier entries—“Rebirth” is intended to launch a new trilogy. Directed by Gareth Edwards and written by original franchise scribe David Koepp, the film stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali in a plot that sends an expedition to harvest dinosaur DNA for a potential heart medicine. The dinosaur saga dominated a weekend that also saw Apple’s racing drama “F1” add $26.1 million domestically to reach $109 million in North America. The robust turnout for “Rebirth” gives theater owners another lift in a summer season that analysts expect to top $4 billion in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales for the first time since 2019.
