An act calling itself The Velvet Sundown has acknowledged that its music, artwork and even band photographs are entirely produced with generative-AI tools, after the project drew more than 1.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify in just over a month. A revised biography posted to the group’s Spotify page between 5 and 8 July describes the venture as “an ongoing artistic provocation” that is “not quite human, not quite machine.” The band appeared on streaming services in early June and rapidly released two full-length albums—“Floating On Echoes” on 5 June and “Dust And Silence” on 20 June. A third record, “Paper Sun Rebellion,” is slated for release on 14 July. Listener data show the bulk of the audience coming from major streaming markets, with São Paulo alone accounting for more than 15,000 monthly plays. Deezer, a rival to Spotify, has labelled the catalogue “content generated by AI,” and an analysis by France’s Ircam Amplify found that most tracks on the second album were created with Suno, a text-to-music generator. Spotify declined to comment but said it does not privilege AI-generated tracks in its algorithms. Former Spotify data scientist Glenn McDonald said the band’s climb was likely helped by paid and algorithmic playlist placements. The episode underscores how quickly synthetic music can capture audiences at scale. Deezer estimates that around 20,000 fully AI-generated tracks—about 18 percent of all new uploads—hit streaming platforms each day, raising questions about disclosure, copyright and compensation for human artists.
The Velvet Sundown has 750,000 listeners on Spotify. But it never existed. And most people didn't notice. This is Suno. I can still hear it. But there are far better AI models out there already. If you can’t tell the difference anymore, your reality is already gone. https://t.co/Vp6zgjQCSk

Sie klingen echt, existieren aber nur als Datei: Computergenerierte Bands bilden eine wachsende Blase, die sich gegenseitig algorithmisch verstärkt. (Abo) https://t.co/pFFQX4W6Ey https://t.co/CKCTTsYdmC
