Philadelphia’s annual Wawa Welcome America festival concluded late Friday with a fireworks display above the Benjamin Franklin Parkway after a last-minute shake-up to its concert lineup. Headliners LL Cool J and Jazmine Sullivan withdrew earlier in the day, saying they stood in solidarity with striking members of District Council 33, the city’s largest municipal workers union. R&B singer JoJo and Puerto Rican rapper Álvaro Díaz stepped in as replacement acts for the nationally televised show, which began at 8 p.m. Eastern. On the West Coast, San Diego staged its Big Bay Boom, one of the country’s largest Independence Day pyrotechnic shows. Barges anchored in San Diego Bay fired thousands of shells in a 20-minute sequence broadcast live by local television outlets and streamed on multiple digital platforms. City officials said the event, now in its 25th year, was expected to draw more than 300,000 spectators to waterfront parks and piers.
