Macy’s staged its 49th annual Fourth of July fireworks on Friday night, firing about 80,000 shells in 30 colors from the Brooklyn Bridge and four barges anchored in the lower East River. The 25-minute display, which reached heights of roughly 1,000 feet, marked the show’s return to the East River after last year’s detour to the Hudson and drew tens of thousands of spectators to waterfront vantage points in Manhattan and Brooklyn. NBC aired and Peacock streamed a two-hour prime-time special from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET, hosted by Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose. Musical performances by the Jonas Brothers, Lenny Kravitz, Keke Palmer, Ava Max, Eric Church and Trisha Yearwood were set against a score produced by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and James Poyser. Pyrotechnics began shortly after 9:15 p.m., following the live entertainment segment. City officials opened elevated portions of the FDR Drive and sections of Brooklyn Bridge Park to the public, distributing about 100,000 complimentary tickets and banning large bags, alcohol, and drones for security. Executive producer Will Coss said the event was designed to provide “25 minutes of uninterrupted celebration,” a goal helped by clear skies and mild temperatures.
