Chloe Childress, a 19-year-old counselor at Camp Mystic, was among those who died in the devastating flooding that struck Texas Hill Country over the July 4 holiday weekend. The century-old girls’ camp reported grieving the loss of 27 campers and staff members due to the disaster. Childress was remembered by her family and community for her joyful spirit, remarkable compassion, and ability to make others feel seen. In addition to Childress, 23 campers were confirmed dead in the floods. The tragedy also affected young campers such as 8-year-old Blakely McCrory from Bellaire, who was killed in the flood and whose mother later received a letter Blakely had written from Camp Mystic. The flooding has deeply impacted the Camp Mystic community and the families of those lost.
