A line of strong storms swept across the Chicago metropolitan area late Saturday into early Sunday, dropping 3–4 inches of rain in several suburbs and bringing wind gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines. The National Weather Service issued multiple flood advisories as viaducts in Chicago’s Archer Heights and Roseland neighborhoods filled with water and other roads became impassable. In Mount Prospect, fire officials said a likely microburst sheared the roof off a 60-unit apartment building on Huntington Commons Road, scattering debris across a parking lot and damaging vehicles. While no injuries were reported, more than 300 residents were displaced, and the American Red Cross was called in to arrange temporary housing after the structure was declared uninhabitable. Utility company ComEd reported nearly 65,000 customers without electricity at the height of the storm, with crews still working on repairs Monday. Cleanup operations also continued in Cicero, Joliet and other hard-hit suburbs where standing water and fallen limbs hampered traffic. Forecasters cautioned that the region is not yet in the clear. The National Weather Service said additional thunderstorms are likely Monday afternoon and evening, with the highest risk between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m. The agency warned of possible flash flooding, damaging straight-line winds and brief tornadoes, urging residents in saturated and flood-prone areas to prepare.
