Colorado’s Lee Fire surged to 116,859 acres this week, becoming the state’s fifth-largest wildfire on record and prompting the evacuation of all 179 inmates from the minimum-security Rifle Correctional Center. The prisoners were transferred about 150 miles southeast to the Buena Vista Correctional Complex as winds and low humidity propelled flames across Garfield and Rio Blanco counties. Containment on the lightning-sparked blaze remained at just 6%, with more than 1,200 firefighters, 13 aircraft and 62 engines deployed to hold the fire west of Colorado 13 and north of County Road 5. Officials confirmed that at least five homes and 14 outbuildings have been lost. Governor Jared Polis declared a disaster emergency and mobilised the Colorado National Guard, while the Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to cover up to 75% of eligible firefighting costs. Nearby, the Elk Fire has burned 14,549 acres and is 30% contained, and smaller incidents are active near Pagosa Springs and in the San Juan National Forest. State health authorities issued air-quality warnings for Rio Blanco, Garfield, Eagle, Pitkin and Gunnison counties, advising residents to limit outdoor activity as smoke continues to blanket western Colorado.
