The National Weather Service is forecasting unsettled conditions across large parts of the United States as the Labor Day holiday approaches, with scattered thunderstorms, cooler-than-normal temperatures in some regions and heightened rip-current hazards for swimmers. In the Southwest, moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Juliette is feeding showers across southeastern California and southwest Arizona. Although Phoenix is expected to reach an average 104°F, cloud cover is keeping other areas cooler than seasonal norms and could trigger storms over Yavapai and Coconino counties. Along Colorado’s Front Range, forecasters expect slow-moving thunderstorms between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday capable of heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds. Daytime temperatures should stay in the upper 70s to low 80s—well below normal—with another round of storms possible Friday before drier weather arrives for the weekend. The East Coast and Southeast face increasing rain chances. Central Florida’s outlook calls for a 60–70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms each day from Friday through Monday, with highs in the low 90s. A similar pattern is anticipated in South Florida, where humidity will push heat indices toward the low 100s. A cold front sweeping across the Great Lakes is driving brisk north to northeast winds. The NWS has flagged a high swim risk for southern Wisconsin from Thursday afternoon through early Friday and warns of dangerous currents along Lake Michigan. Farther east, New Jersey beaches remain under a moderate rip-current advisory. Forecasters expect conditions to improve gradually on Saturday, offering seasonal temperatures and lower humidity for much of the country, although isolated afternoon storms could still develop in several regions.
