The Milwaukee Bucks have waived nine-time All-Star Damian Lillard, using the NBA’s waive-and-stretch provision to spread roughly $113 million in guaranteed salary over the next five seasons. The move ends Lillard’s uneven two-year stint in Milwaukee and will make the 35-year-old guard a free agent once he clears waivers. Lillard, who underwent surgery in May to repair a torn left Achilles, is said to be “elated” by the decision because he can now choose his next team without sacrificing money still owed by the Bucks, according to The Athletic. League sources told the publication that the Golden State Warriors, Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers were among several contenders that phoned Lillard’s representatives within hours of the announcement. He can sign immediately—likely at a minimum salary while he rehabs—or wait until next offseason to gauge his market when fully healthy.
