The Orlando Magic have brought back forward-center Moe Wagner on a one-year, $5 million contract, according to multiple people familiar with the agreement. The deal comes five days after the club declined its $11 million team option on the 28-year-old, allowing him to enter unrestricted free agency while retaining his Bird rights. Orlando simultaneously declined a $2.1 million option on 22-year-old forward Caleb Houstan, who remains on the market. The moves gave the Magic additional roster and salary flexibility while keeping open the possibility of re-signing both players because their Bird rights let the team exceed the cap to retain them. Wagner was in the midst of a career year—averaging 12.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and hitting 36% of his three-pointers in 30 games—before a torn left ACL ended his season in late December. Houstan, meanwhile, connected on 50.7% of his three-point attempts after the All-Star break. Wagner’s return pushes Orlando to 13 players on standard contracts and leaves the club just under the NBA’s first apron of roughly $195.9 million.
