The Orlando Magic have reached an agreement with forward Paolo Banchero on a five-year maximum rookie contract extension that guarantees $239 million and could rise to about $287 million if he qualifies for super-max escalators, according to his agent Mike Miller. The deal includes a player option in the fifth season, making it the first rookie-scale maximum extension to carry such a clause since Luka Doncic and Trae Young signed similar contracts in 2021. Incentive triggers linked to All-NBA, MVP or Defensive Player of the Year honors would lift Banchero’s salary to 30 percent of the salary cap. Banchero, 22, averaged career highs of 25.9 points and 7.5 rebounds despite missing 34 games with an oblique injury last season. The No. 1 pick in the 2022 draft was the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2023 and earned his first All-Star selection in 2024 while leading Orlando to a second consecutive postseason appearance. Locking in Banchero means the Magic now have their core—Banchero, forward Franz Wagner and guard Jalen Suggs—under contract for at least the next five years, with newly acquired guard Desmond Bane signed through 2029. The agreement caps an off-season in which Orlando has moved aggressively to solidify a young roster aiming to build on back-to-back playoff berths.
