Auburn to Retire Cam Newton’s No. 2 Jersey on Oct. 11

Auburn University will retire Cam Newton’s No. 2 jersey on 11 October, staging the ceremony at Jordan-Hare Stadium ahead of the Tigers’ home game against Georgia. The school announced the honor on Monday, making Newton just the fourth player in program history to have his number taken out of circulation, alongside fellow Heisman winners Bo Jackson and Pat Sullivan and receiver Terry Beasley. Newton’s 2010 campaign remains one of the most decorated in college football history. The quarterback accounted for 50 touchdowns, captured the Heisman Trophy and led Auburn to a 14-0 season capped by the BCS national championship. He was a consensus All-American and the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player in conference history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 in the same season. The 36-year-old went on to an 11-year NFL career highlighted by the 2015 league MVP award and a Super Bowl appearance with the Carolina Panthers. Auburn’s tribute cements Newton’s status among the program’s all-time greats and adds another milestone to one of the sport’s most influential modern careers.
