Rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers delivered his first two NFL touchdown passes to lift the Miami Dolphins to a 24–17 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Saturday. The seventh-round pick from Texas entered after halftime and connected with fellow rookie Theo Wease Jr. for scoring strikes of 15 and eight yards in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Ewers finished 11-of-17 for 116 yards and a 123.7 passer rating, while Wease caught six balls for 80 yards. Earlier, backup Zach Wilson, starting in place of the resting Tua Tagovailoa, went 15-for-23 for 151 yards and an 11-yard touchdown to Dee Eskridge as Miami improved its preseason mark to 1-0-1. Detroit relied on reserve quarterback Kyle Allen with starter Jared Goff sidelined. Allen completed 14-of-17 attempts for 124 yards and two scores—an 11-yard throw to Jackson Meeks and an 18-yard strike to Isaac TeSlaa—giving the Lions a 14-7 halftime lead. A muffed Miami punt set up Jake Bates’s 33-yard field goal that briefly put Detroit ahead 17-14 early in the fourth quarter. Ewers’s second touchdown pass restored the Dolphins’ advantage, and he later directed a 92-yard drive capped by Jason Sanders’s 22-yard field goal with 1:53 left. Cornerback Ethan Robinson sealed the outcome by intercepting Hendon Hooker at the Miami 13-yard line with 22 seconds remaining. Head coach Mike McDaniel praised both Wilson and Ewers for “making the most of their opportunities” as roster battles intensify ahead of next week’s preseason finale against Indianapolis. Detroit, now 1-2, hosts Houston in its final warm-up before the regular season.
