The Philadelphia Eagles have acquired wide receiver John Metchie III from the Houston Texans, according to multiple reports. Houston receives tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round draft choice, while Philadelphia gains Metchie and a 2026 sixth-round pick. The move, completed on 17 August, continues general manager Howie Roseman’s practice of using late-summer trades to reinforce the roster. Metchie, 25, was a 2022 second-round selection who missed his rookie year while undergoing treatment for leukemia. Over the past two seasons he logged 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown in 29 games for Houston. The Alabama product reunites with former Crimson Tide teammate DeVonta Smith and gives quarterback Jalen Hurts another option behind starters A.J. Brown and Smith. The timing proved critical: four days after the trade, rookie wideout Johnny Wilson was ruled out for the entire 2025 season with knee and ankle injuries that will require surgery. Wilson had been expected to rotate with the Eagles’ second unit, making Metchie’s arrival pivotal to preserving depth at the position. Philadelphia’s reshuffle comes amid a spate of preseason injuries around the league. New England Patriots receiver Ja'Lynn Polk will also miss the 2025 campaign following shoulder surgery, and Pittsburgh Steelers first-round defensive tackle Derrick Harmon left Thursday’s exhibition with a knee injury that is still being evaluated.
