Alphabet-owned YouTube TV warned its roughly nine million subscribers that all Fox-owned channels, including Fox Broadcast Network, Fox News and Fox Sports, will be removed from the streaming bundle if the two companies fail to reach a new carriage agreement by 5 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Aug. 27. Google said Fox is demanding fees “far higher than what partners with comparable content offerings receive,” and pledged to credit users $10 a month should the blackout occur. The platform’s base plan currently costs $82.99. Fox Corp. responded that Google is exploiting its “outsized influence” by proposing terms that are “out of step with the marketplace” and has begun alerting viewers to the potential loss of service. The standoff threatens to interrupt coverage of high-profile events only days before the first full weekend of college football and the opening week of the NFL season, including the top-ranked Texas–Ohio State matchup and local NFL broadcasts carried by Fox affiliates. The dispute underscores a broader pattern of tension between programmers and distributors as audiences migrate to streaming. YouTube TV narrowly averted a similar blackout with Paramount Global in February and previously lost Disney channels for two days in 2021 before striking a deal. Negotiations with Fox are continuing, but neither side has indicated whether a temporary extension is likely before Wednesday’s deadline.
