Jacksonville Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter made his long-anticipated NFL debut on Saturday in a preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, lining up at both wide receiver and cornerback. The No. 2 overall pick, who won the 2024 Heisman Trophy as a rare two-way player at Colorado, fulfilled the club’s plan to split his workload almost evenly between offense and defense. Hunter logged 11 snaps on offense and caught both of his targets for nine yards, with a third seven-yard reception erased by penalty. On defense he played eight snaps, was not thrown at in coverage and registered one missed tackle on an outside run. The Jaguars had indicated before the game that they would cap the 22-year-old’s workload at roughly 10 snaps per unit, a target they hit while giving coaches live film of his versatility. Jacksonville is expected to increase Hunter’s usage over the remaining preseason schedule as it evaluates how best to deploy a player bidding to become the league’s first regular two-way contributor in decades. While Saturday’s sample was limited, the Jaguars said the outing met expectations and sets the stage for a larger role when the regular season begins.
