Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders sustained an oblique strain during a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on 13 Aug and was immediately held out. The club said the injury is day-to-day but confirmed he will miss Saturday’s preseason game in Philadelphia, shelving plans for a second consecutive start after his two-touchdown debut against Carolina last week. Head coach Kevin Stefanski instead handed the start to fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, who had been limited by hamstring tightness but returned to full practice early in the week. Gabriel, a third-round pick, opened Saturday’s game and completed 13 of 18 passes for 143 yards while committing an interception and a lost fumble before being replaced at halftime. Cleveland went on to defeat the Eagles 22–13, improving to 2-0 in the preseason. During a mid-game television interview, Gabriel remarked that “there are entertainers and there are competitors,” a line widely interpreted as a jab at Sanders. He later clarified the comment, saying he was referring to the media as entertainers and reaffirmed his support for his teammate. The Browns’ quarterback depth chart remains unsettled. Veteran Joe Flacco, 40, has been held out of both exhibition games to preserve him for the regular season, while Kenny Pickett continues to nurse a hamstring injury and Deshaun Watson is recovering from a torn Achilles. Cleveland has one preseason game left, against the Los Angeles Rams, to sort out backup roles before final roster cuts.
