Nigeria has deported 50 Chinese nationals and one Tunisian who were convicted of cyber-terrorism and internet fraud, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said. The expulsions, carried out on 21 August, are part of a clampdown that began on 15 August and has so far led to the removal of 102 foreign nationals—including 60 Chinese citizens and 39 Filipinos—linked to online investment and romance scams run from Lagos. EFCC officials said the foreigners were among almost 200 people arrested in a raid on one of Nigeria’s largest cybercrime syndicates late last year. The agency, working with the immigration service, indicated that further deportations are planned as investigations continue into networks that allegedly defrauded victims in North America and Europe. China’s embassy and consulates in Nigeria said they are following the case closely and reiterated Beijing’s call for its citizens abroad to respect local laws. The Nigerian action coincides with Interpol’s “Operation Serengeti 2.0,” which resulted in 1,209 arrests across 18 African countries and the UK between June and August. The operation recovered $97.4 million, dismantled 11,432 malicious online infrastructures and underscored the continent’s growing role in global cybercrime. Among the most significant Serengeti seizures, Angolan authorities shut down 25 illegal crypto-mining centres allegedly run by 60 Chinese nationals, confiscating equipment and power stations valued at $37 million, while Zambian police broke up an online investment fraud that cost 65,000 victims about $300 million. Interpol said the scale of the arrests highlights the need for deeper cross-border cooperation against increasingly sophisticated digital scams.
