Alan G. Hassenfeld, the former chairman and chief executive officer of Hasbro Inc., died on 9 July at the age of 76, the company said. No cause of death was given. A grandson of company co-founder Henry Hassenfeld, Alan joined the Pawtucket, Rhode Island-based toy maker in 1970 and rose through international and marketing roles. He became chief executive in 1989 after the death of his brother Stephen and oversaw a period of global expansion that strengthened brands such as G.I. Joe and Play-Doh. Hassenfeld stepped down as CEO in 2003 and retired as chairman two years later, becoming emeritus chairman; he was the last family member to sit on Hasbro’s board. Beyond the boardroom, Hassenfeld was known for philanthropy. He helped establish Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence and led the Hassenfeld Family Initiatives, which supports child-safety programs and economic development in Rhode Island. “Alan’s enormous heart was, and will remain, the guiding force behind Hasbro,” current CEO Chris Cocks said in a statement.
