On the night of August 27, 2025, multiple drone strikes were reported in Afghanistan's eastern provinces of Khost and Nangarhar, targeting areas near the Durand Line bordering Pakistan. Local sources identified the targeted locations as the "29th Canal" area in Ghani Khel district of Nangarhar and the Surkhakh area in Spera district of Khost. Pakistani drones are believed to have conducted the strikes, which reportedly targeted homes associated with the banned Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant group. Afghan officials confirmed at least six civilian casualties, including three children killed and several others injured, with women and children among the wounded. The Taliban provincial authorities in both provinces acknowledged the airstrikes and confirmed civilian casualties. In response, the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Pakistan's ambassador in Kabul to protest the strikes and delivered a formal complaint. The Taliban's Ministry of Defense condemned the Pakistani airstrikes, warning of consequences and emphasizing the deaths of civilian women and children. Pakistan has not officially confirmed the strikes or commented on the targets. Separately, U.S. diplomat Zalmay Khalilzad credited Afghan Taliban and local militias for killing an Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP) commander in Khyber district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
