Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has intensified a country-wide mobilisation to demand the release of its founder, former prime minister Imran Khan, who has been held in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail since August 2023. Rallies under the banner “Free Imran Khan Movement” have been staged in Hyderabad, Quetta, Duki, Loralai and Rawalpindi over the past week, with party flags visible in large street gatherings despite restrictions on public assembly. In messages relayed from prison, Khan said he is willing to remain jailed “for life” rather than compromise, declaring that “the time for negotiations is over” and urging supporters to confront what he called a repressive system through protest. He alleged that prison authorities, acting on orders from army chief Gen. Asim Munir, have stripped him and his wife Bushra Bibi of basic facilities and placed them in near-total isolation. PTI secretary-general Salman Akram Raja and information secretary Sheikh Waqqas said the campaign will peak on 5 August, the second anniversary of Khan’s incarceration, with coordinated demonstrations by the party’s federal and provincial lawmakers in every province. Raja downplayed internal disputes and warned that dissenting officials could face disciplinary action as the party seeks a unified front. The domestic campaign has begun to draw international attention. At a U.S. congressional hearing on political repression in Pakistan, Representative Chris Smith warned that basic freedoms in the country are "in jeopardy" and cited Khan’s continued imprisonment and reported prison conditions as alarming examples. He urged Washington to "redouble" its commitment to democracy and human rights in Pakistan. Pakistan’s government has not formally responded to Khan’s allegations of mistreatment. A senior Pakistan Muslim League-N senator, Irfan Siddiqui, has denied social-media speculation that former premier Nawaz Sharif plans to meet Khan in jail, and officials have remained silent on the planned 5 August protests.
