Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has begun a fresh nationwide campaign demanding the release of its founder, former prime minister Imran Khan, who has been in Adiala Jail since August 2023 on corruption and other charges he denies. The drive started with rallies in Hyderabad, Quetta, Duki, Loralai and Rawalpindi after Khan’s supporters unfurled party flags across city centres last week. The effort is already mired in confusion. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on 13 July unveiled a 90-day “do-or-die” timetable, saying the party would escalate pressure on the government through mid-October unless Khan is freed. That pledge clashes with an earlier directive issued from Khan’s official social-media account instructing organisers to build momentum for a peak on 5 August, the second anniversary of his imprisonment. Senior PTI officials have publicly contradicted Gandapur. Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja told multiple television channels that the 90-day statement was never cleared by the party leadership, while Punjab chief organiser Aliya Hamza Malik said she had not been briefed on the proposal. Central information secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram insisted that any differences were minor and that PTI remained united behind the single goal of securing Khan’s release. The mixed messaging adds to pressure on a party that is also dealing with defections, legal setbacks and government warnings of tighter security if protests turn violent. Analysts say the internal discord could sap momentum just as PTI tries to regain the street power that once rattled Islamabad. For now, the party is pressing ahead with provincial planning meetings and further rallies while it works to reconcile the competing 5 August and 90-day calendars.
