Google’s YouTube TV and Fox Corp. averted an immediate blackout of Fox channels by agreeing to a short-term contract extension minutes after their carriage pact expired at 5 p.m. Eastern on Aug. 27. The stop-gap deal keeps Fox News, local Fox stations and Fox’s sports networks on the streaming service while the sides continue to negotiate longer-term terms. The showdown centred on carriage fees. YouTube TV told its 9.5 million subscribers that Fox was demanding payments “far higher than what partners with comparable content offerings receive,” while Fox said Google was leveraging its market power to force “one-sided terms.” Without a deal, viewers would have lost marquee broadcasts such as this weekend’s Texas–Ohio State college-football opener and the start of the NFL season next month. Ahead of the deadline YouTube TV promised customers a $10 monthly credit if Fox channels went dark, and received an unusual push from Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr, who urged Google publicly to strike an accord even though the agency has no authority over internet TV services. Neither company disclosed the length or financial details of the extension. Earlier on Wednesday YouTube TV announced a multiyear agreement to add the right-wing One America News network later in 2025, a move analysts said could give Google additional leverage as fee talks with Fox continue.
