Rep. Riley Moore of West Virginia has asked President Donald Trump to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Patrick J. Buchanan, the 86-year-old conservative commentator and co-founder of The American Conservative magazine. In a letter dated Aug. 22, Moore said Buchanan’s early warnings about deindustrialization, porous borders and foreign entanglements laid intellectual groundwork for the “America First” agenda that helped propel Trump to the White House. Moore wrote that Buchanan’s decades as a White House adviser, presidential candidate and syndicated columnist shaped U.S. political debate and “awakened the political consciousness of millions.” He argued that bestowing the nation’s highest civilian honor would recognize “one of the truest patriots of the past century.” The White House has not commented on whether Buchanan will be added to Trump’s forthcoming list of medal recipients.
