Oscar Piastri strengthened his grip on the Formula One championship by winning a rain-interrupted Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, the 13th round of the 2025 season. The McLaren driver seized the lead from pole-sitter and team-mate Lando Norris on the first green-flag lap after a 1-hour-20-minute delay and controlled the remaining 44 laps to take his third victory of the year. Norris finished 7.6 seconds adrift to complete a McLaren one-two, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc held off Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for third. George Russell brought his Mercedes home fifth ahead of Williams’ Alex Albon. Lewis Hamilton climbed from 18th to seventh, and points were rounded out by Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hülkenberg. The result moves Piastri to 266 points, widening his advantage over Norris to 16 and leaving Verstappen 81 points back with 11 races remaining. The race was run largely on a drying track after starting behind the Safety Car because of limited visibility. A day earlier, Verstappen had delivered Red Bull’s first win since the dismissal of long-time team boss Christian Horner, edging Piastri in the 100-kilometre sprint. The sprint victory, overseen by new principal Laurent Mekies, provided limited comfort for the reigning champion, who continues to trail the McLarens heavily in the standings. Teams head next to the Hungaroring for the Hungarian Grand Prix on 3 August, the final event before Formula One’s summer break.
