More than 21 million people in the US were victims of fraud last year from phony emails, phone calls, and text messages. According to the FBI, 9,521 people suffered from real estate scams in 2023 alone, losing more than $145 million combined. An FBI report also found that scams targeting the elderly cost Americans over $3.4 billion in 2023. Business Email Compromise (BEC) was the second costliest type of crime tracked by the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), leading to billions of dollars in reported losses. Seller impersonation is a growing problem in the real estate industry.
