The Village of Dolton, a suburb south of Chicago, has completed the purchase of the childhood home of Pope Leo XIV for $375,000. The Dolton Village Board unanimously approved the acquisition, which was finalized in early July 2025. The modest two-story brick house, approximately 1,050 square feet, gained international attention as the boyhood residence of Robert Prevost, who later became Pope Leo XIV. The purchase price represented a 70% premium over the initial asking price. Village officials hope to transform the property into a historic landmark and a global tourist attraction, aiming to revitalize the area. Efforts are also underway to obtain landmark status for the home and the nearby abandoned St. Mary’s of Assumption church. The acquisition is viewed as an opportunity to boost tourism and honor the pope's legacy in his hometown.
