Samsung Electronics has begun sales of the world’s first consumer television using its new “Micro RGB” backlight technology, a 115-inch 4K set priced at KRW 44.9 million (about $32,000) in South Korea. The company plans to introduce the model in the United States next, followed by additional markets and screen sizes. Micro RGB replaces the white or blue mini-LED arrays found in current premium LCD sets with individually controlled red, green and blue LEDs that measure under 100 µm. Driven by Samsung’s Micro RGB AI engine, the backlight is designed to deliver more precise local dimming, 100 percent coverage of the BT.2020 colour space and higher colour volume than conventional mini-LED televisions. The set also supports a 144 Hz variable refresh rate, HDR10+ and a built-in 70-watt 4.2.2 Dolby Atmos speaker system. At roughly one-fifth the price of Samsung’s 110-inch MicroLED television, the new model positions Micro RGB as a potential bridge between today’s mini-LED LCDs and far costlier self-emissive MicroLED displays. Analysts say the launch could intensify competition with high-end OLED TVs by offering greater brightness and a broader colour gamut, though the technology still relies on an LCD panel and cannot match the per-pixel control of OLED or MicroLED.
