Brazil retained the Women’s Copa América crown, defeating Colombia 5–4 in a penalty shootout after an extraordinary 4–4 draw in Quito. The victory delivers a record-extending ninth title—and fifth consecutive—for the Seleção, which has now captured nine of the tournament’s ten editions. The final at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado swung repeatedly. Colombia led three times through Linda Caicedo, a Tarciane own goal and Mayra Ramírez’s late strike, only for Brazil to respond on each occasion. Angelina converted a first-half stoppage-time penalty, Amanda Gutierres struck in the 80th minute, and 39-year-old Marta forced extra time with a spectacular shot six minutes into stoppage time before adding another goal in the 105th. Leicy Santos’s free-kick levelled the match again in the 115th to send the contest to penalties. In the shootout, Lorena saved Leicy Santos’s effort and watched Jorelyn Carabalí fire wide, allowing Brazil to prevail despite misses from Angelina and Marta. Gutierres, Tarciane, Mariza, Johnson and Luany converted for the champions, while Catalina Usme, Marcela Restrepo, Caicedo and Wendy Bonilla scored for Colombia. Argentina secured the bronze medal earlier in the day, beating Uruguay 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw. The tournament, staged in Ecuador, underscored Brazil’s continuing dominance of South American women’s football while highlighting the narrowing gap, with Colombia pushing the favourites to the limit in one of the most dramatic finals in the competition’s history.
