Spain reached their first UEFA Women’s European Championship final by defeating eight-time winners Germany 1–0 after extra time in Zurich on Wednesday. Midfielder Aitana Bonmatí settled a tight semi-final in the 113th minute, drilling Athenea del Castillo’s pass inside goalkeeper Ann-Kathrin Berger’s near post. Barcelona’s Bonmatí, holder of the Ballon d’Or, struck after Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll had preserved the deadlock with a double save in stoppage time of regulation. The world champions will face reigning European title-holders England in Sunday’s final.
Aitana Bonmati shows why she's world class. With Spain and Germany looking like only penalties will separate them, the Ballon D'Or holder finishes from a tight angle to finally break the semi-final deadlock deep into extra-time. Cue wild Spanish celebrations. #WEURO2025 https://t.co/lKOVDqZQXz
