Chelsea advanced to the inaugural 32-team FIFA Club World Cup final after beating Brazil’s Fluminense 2–0 in Tuesday’s semi-final at MetLife Stadium. Both goals were scored by 23-year-old forward Joao Pedro, who was making his first start since completing a transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion reportedly worth about £60 million. Pedro struck in the 18th and 56th minutes, declining to celebrate out of respect for Fluminense, the club where he began his career. “I can only say sorry, but I have to be professional,” he said after collecting the player-of-the-match award. The brace capped a rapid impact barely a week after the Brazilian joined Chelsea. Head coach Enzo Maresca called the result “a great achievement” and praised Pedro’s freshness after the off-season break. The Italian added that midfielder Moises Caicedo, who twisted an ankle late on, will be assessed ahead of Sunday’s final against either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid. Chelsea, fourth in last season’s Premier League and winners of the UEFA Conference League, have already secured at least $80 million in tournament prize money.
