Liverpool are mourning forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva after the pair were killed in a car accident on 3 July in Zamora, Spain, only 11 days after Jota’s wedding. A planned minute’s silence before the Community Shield against Crystal Palace at Wembley on 10 August was cut short when a small group of Palace supporters chanted, prompting the referee to end the tribute. Crystal Palace went on to win the match on penalties. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk called the incident “disappointing,” while commentators urged Palace to identify those responsible. Tributes resumed without incident on 15 August as Liverpool opened the Premier League season at Anfield against Bournemouth. Jota’s family attended, players wore black armbands and the crowd produced a stadium-wide mosaic, observed a pre-match silence and applauded again in the 20th minute to reflect the Portuguese winger’s shirt number. Debutant Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring and dedicated his goal to Jota. Liverpool have retired the No. 20 shirt across all teams and the Premier League has approved tributes at every fixture in the first round of matches.
