Liverpool FC said it will permanently retire the No. 20 shirt in memory of Diogo Jota, describing the number as “rightly immortalised” for the Portuguese forward’s role in the club’s 2024-25 Premier League triumph—its 20th league title. The club noted Jota’s decisive strike in April’s Merseyside derby against Everton, his final goal, as emblematic of his impact since arriving from Wolverhampton in 2020. Jota died early Thursday, 3 July, in a car crash near Cernadilla, Zamora, Spain, that also claimed the life of his younger brother, André Silva. He was 28. Liverpool said the retirement is a rare honour, previously reserved only for the victims of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster. During five seasons at Anfield, Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances and lifted three major trophies, including last season’s league crown. The club added that the tribute reflects both his on-field contribution and the deep bond he forged with supporters, whose terrace chant begins, “He wears the 20 and he’ll take us to victory.”
