Liverpool winger Luis Díaz is under fire after failing to attend the 6 July funeral of teammate Diogo Jota and Jota’s brother André Silva in Gondomar, Portugal. Most of the Premier League club’s squad, including captain Virgil van Dijk and manager Arne Slot, travelled to pay their respects following the brothers’ death in a car accident in northern Spain. While the service was taking place, Díaz was photographed at a private influencer event in Barranquilla, Colombia, where videos showed him dancing and signing memorabilia. Local media report that the 28-year-old remained in his home country to fulfil sponsorship commitments; the journey from Barranquilla to Lisbon can take more than 17 hours, but other players facing long trips managed to attend. Supporters and commentators have questioned Díaz’s absence, noting that Jota publicly supported the Colombian in 2023 after the kidnapping of Díaz’s father. Díaz expressed his condolences on Instagram, writing that he had “no words” and that Jota’s gestures toward him were unforgettable, yet the social-media message has done little to quell criticism of what many perceive as a lack of solidarity.
