Apple on 19 Aug 2025 activated support for digital driver’s licences and state IDs in Montana, making the state the eleventh U.S. jurisdiction where residents can add official identification to the Apple Wallet app on iPhone and Apple Watch. The Montana Motor Vehicle Division simultaneously introduced “Montana Mobile IDs” and a Mobile ID Verifier app for businesses on both iOS and Android. MVD Administrator Laurie Bakri said the initiative follows a three-year effort to modernise the agency and is intended to speed identity checks while limiting the personal data shared. For now, the digital credential is accepted at MVD exam-station kiosks, participating businesses and more than 250 Transportation Security Administration checkpoints nationwide; the Montana Highway Patrol expects to gain verification capability by year-end. State officials stress that residents must still carry a physical licence, as acceptance of the mobile version remains limited. Montana joins Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland, New Mexico, Ohio and Puerto Rico in Apple’s slow-moving rollout of Wallet-based IDs. Apple says additional states, including Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Utah, are committed to adopt the feature, which was first announced in 2022.
