Google is accelerating its use of generative-AI summaries across its consumer services. On 29 July, the company began releasing “Video Overviews” in NotebookLM, its note-taking and research assistant. The tool converts users’ documents into narrated slide presentations that pull in images, diagrams, quotes and data, offering a visual alternative to the platform’s existing Audio Overviews. The feature is available in English worldwide, with additional languages promised. Google also refreshed NotebookLM’s Studio panel, letting users create and store multiple outputs—Audio or Video Overviews, Mind Maps and Reports—within a single notebook and multitask across them. The launch follows a June experiment inside YouTube that surfaces an AI Overviews-style carousel at the top of search results for shopping, travel and activity queries. The test, open to U.S. YouTube Premium members (about $14 a month) through 30 July, displays suggested video clips alongside AI-generated summaries, allowing viewers to glean key information without leaving the results page. Industry analysts say the change could reduce watch-time for creators while streamlining discovery for users. Taken together, the moves show Alphabet’s flagship brands adopting the same AI summarisation framework—initially deployed in Google Search—across video, productivity and learning tools. Google says the technology can make complex material easier to grasp, though publishers and creators are watching closely to see how automated summaries affect engagement and revenue.
