Grammarly has overhauled its flagship service with a new document-centric interface built on Coda, the productivity platform it purchased last year. The redesign marks the company’s most significant product update since its 2009 launch and positions the firm as a broader writing-productivity suite rather than a standalone grammar checker. The update introduces nine specialised AI agents aimed at students and knowledge workers. Key features include an AI grader that can estimate a paper’s likely mark, a citation-finder agent that automatically generates properly formatted references, and a reader-reactions tool that predicts audience questions. Additional agents handle paraphrasing, expert review, proofreading, plagiarism detection and AI-authorship scoring, giving users end-to-end support throughout the writing process. Most of the agents are available immediately to Grammarly’s Free and Pro tiers at no extra charge, while the plagiarism checker and AI detector launch in Pro only. The company said the tools are designed to “provide assistance at every stage of the writing process while maintaining user control and authenticity,” with roll-outs to Enterprise and Education customers planned later this year. The move arrives as generative-AI adoption accelerates in higher education and the workplace. In a related sign of the market’s momentum, San Francisco-based startup Paradigm raised a $5 million seed round led by General Catalyst and opened public access to its spreadsheet that embeds AI agents in individual cells. Together, the launches underscore intensifying competition to weave autonomous agents into everyday productivity software.
