Microsoft is advancing its AI capabilities through the integration of autonomous agents across its platforms, particularly focusing on GitHub Copilot and Windows. GitHub Copilot now includes an autonomous agent mode that can handle issues, write pull requests, and iterate on feedback, effectively transforming developers' roles from coders to strategic orchestrators. This mode executes workflows, allowing developers to concentrate on more complex problems. At Microsoft Build 2025, it was revealed that 15 million developers use GitHub Copilot and 230,000 organizations are building agents within Microsoft 365. Additionally, Windows and Azure AI Foundry now support over 1,900 AI models, including Grok 3. GitHub Copilot Chat has been open-sourced, enabling asynchronous coding agents. Microsoft is also embedding AI agents directly into the Windows operating system, aiming to shift user interaction with the web by creating an "open agentic web" where AI-powered agents autonomously navigate and interact online. However, technical and adoption challenges remain that may limit the widespread transformation of this vision. Microsoft continues to promote GitHub Copilot as a tool to accelerate cloud projects and development tasks, with a video series highlighting 12 ways it can streamline Azure workflows. Kyle Daigle, COO at GitHub, noted that GitHub Copilot is changing the nature of code reviews by enabling AI to initiate code creation rather than just reviewing existing code.
