Elon Musk’s artificial-intelligence firm xAI has unveiled a new project called “Macrohard,” announced on 24 Aug 2025, that seeks to build a software company operated almost entirely by AI. Musk said the venture could “simulate Microsoft’s entire operations,” signalling a direct challenge to the world’s largest software maker. Macrohard will deploy xAI’s Grok large-language model to spawn hundreds of autonomous agents that write code, generate text, images and video, test products and even act as virtual end-users. Musk argues that because firms such as Microsoft do not manufacture hardware, their business processes can be recreated and run end-to-end by software. A trademark application for “Macrohard” filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office on 1 Aug 2025 lists AI tools for speech and text generation, programming, design and video-game creation. Industry reports add that the venture may draw on xAI’s Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, which is being expanded with millions of Nvidia GPUs, to power the large-scale simulations. The plan positions Macrohard as Musk’s latest attempt to upend an established sector, following earlier pushes in electric vehicles, rocketry and brain–computer interfaces. Technology commentators note that fully autonomous software production still faces reliability and regulatory hurdles, leaving the timeline for Macrohard to match Microsoft’s broad portfolio uncertain.
