OpenAI's ChatGPT now processes more than 2.5 billion prompts globally each day, with over 330 million of those daily prompts originating from users in the United States. The platform has approximately 500 million weekly active users, the majority of whom use the free version. This represents a 150% increase in daily prompts compared to six months ago when the figure was around one billion. ChatGPT's rapid growth is notable given that it launched about 2.5 years ago and currently supports 57 languages across more than 180 countries. Additionally, over 3 million businesses utilize ChatGPT for work purposes. In comparison, Google handles approximately 14 to 16.4 billion searches daily, with around 5 trillion annual searches, placing ChatGPT at about one-sixth of Google's daily search volume. The surge in ChatGPT usage highlights the increasing role of AI tools in how people search, shop, and work, posing new competitive pressure on traditional search engines like Google.
On a related note: "There are approximately 16.4 billion searches on Google every day"; it would be good to know how many of them trigger AI "overviews." and their environmental impact. Then add the numbers from ChatGPT, and various Amazon, Meta, Anthropic, Xai, etc. products... https://t.co/xkn8f66iSK
Google just hit a major milestone with 2 billion users engaging with its AI features across products like Gmail, Android, and Docs. That’s a huge leap from last year and shows how aggressively the company is scaling its AI push. Meanwhile, Meta last reported 1 billion monthly https://t.co/t3Pt8tYL48
The AI community on X is few months ahead of the rest of the world. For most people, AI still just means ChatGPT or Gemini and that’s about it.
