SpaceX’s Starlink satellite-internet service suffered a widespread disruption on Monday, with the monitoring site DownDetector logging about 40,859 outage reports from U.S. users shortly after 2 p.m. Eastern time. The company’s public status page did not list any problems, and SpaceX had not issued a statement by early evening, leaving the cause and full extent of the interruption unclear. The incident underscores persistent reliability challenges for Elon Musk’s consumer-facing businesses. On August 14, DownDetector tracked roughly 16,497 reports of users unable to access Musk’s social-media platform X. Musk earlier this year said he was focusing on “major operational improvements” after a series of service interruptions. Starlink, which relies on a constellation of more than 8,000 active satellites, has become a critical broadband provider in rural areas and on ships and aircraft. Any extended outage could disrupt connectivity for households and commercial customers that depend on the network.
