Meta Platforms has begun rolling out “Writing Help,” an artificial-intelligence assistant built into WhatsApp that can proofread, rephrase and adjust the tone of a draft message before it is sent. Users tap a new pencil icon that appears while composing a text to request suggestions ranging from professional to humorous or supportive rewrites. The feature relies on Meta’s Private Processing technology, which the company says keeps end-to-end encryption intact by handling requests in a confidential environment where neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read the original message or the AI’s output. Writing Help is optional and disabled by default; it works on individual messages rather than entire conversations. Writing Help is launching first in English for users in the United States and several other unnamed markets, with broader language and geographic support planned later this year. The tool follows WhatsApp’s June introduction of AI-generated message summaries and underscores Meta’s push to embed generative AI across its messaging ecosystem.
